February 21, 2020: Tanker Truck Overturns and Explodes on Indianapolis Interstate

Just before 2:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon a tanker truck that was carrying 4,000 gallons of jet fuel overturned and exploded on the ramp from I-465 southbound to I-70 eastbound in Indianapolis, IN.
Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said “the fire caused severe, catastrophic damage to the surrounding area…If you can imagine a 4,000 gallon metal tank split open, there’s just not much left of it.”
The driver of the truck was able to escape the wreckage on his own but suffered significant burns. He was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.
The fire spread 500 feet from the site of the explosion and affected both sides of the bridge, which will now need to be inspected for structural damage before it reopens.
