November 3, 2022: Train Derailment Causes Acid Leak

Local residents in St. James Parish, LA were evacuated on Wednesday following a freight train derailment. One of the tank cars containing 20,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid began leaking following the derailment. It is unclear how much of the product leaked from the tank car.
Louisiana State Police said “Hazardous Materials crews, railroad personnel, parish officials and others are assessing the extent of a leak on one railcar. Crews will continue to monitor the leak with perimeter air monitoring.”
A local senior center is being used as a temporary shelter for those people living in the evacuation zone. All roads in the area have been closed. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. No injuries have been reported.
