An electrical fire forced BP’s Whiting Refinery to shutdown on Wednesday evening. Large plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the facility. The fire caused a power failure that impacted the site’s water cooling system. BP has not released a date that the facility would reopen.
The Whiting Refinery is BP’s largest in the world. The shutdown will affect the supply of gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuel throughout the country. BP spokesperson Christina Audisho said there were “no injuries and no known impacts outside the refinery. BP remains committed to safe, compliant, and reliable operations at the Whiting refinery and everywhere we operate.”
