July 12, 2022: Hazmat Leak Leads to Shelter-In-Place Order in Texas

A tractor trailer leaked an unknown amount of a corrosive material at a Pilot truck stop in Schulenburg, TX. Fayette County Emergency Management responded to the truck stop around 3:00 on Monday afternoon. Authorities evacuated all homes within a half a mile of the scene. Anyone living within 2 miles of the truck stop were asked to shelter in place. One person was injured but their condition has not been released. The corrosive substance was determined to be Sulphur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide is a severe irritant to the respiratory tract, eyes, mucous membranes, and skin.
