A disabled tanker truck leaking diesel fuel has shut down part of North Utica, NY and the Thruway. The Utica Police Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and several other hazmat response personnel responded to the scene on Thursday afternoon. Officials closed and evacuated all the businesses in both North Utica plazas immediately adjacent to Leland and I-790. They will remain closed for the “foreseeable future”. Circumstances surrounding the spill are currently under investigation.
Authorities are estimating as much as 2,500 gallons of diesel has spilled from the tanker truck. The smell of diesel is still present in the immediate area but poses no risk to local residents.
