Galapagos National Park, a protected wildlife area, has confirmed a boat used for scuba-diving excursions sunk near the Galapagos Islands. The boat was carrying 47 barrels of diesel fuel at the time of the accident. Authorities stated the incident left a superficial slick on the water but have not said how much fuel actually spilled. Containment booms were deployed to prevent the fuel from spreading to surrounding areas. Tourism activities have been suspended in the area while crews focus on clean-up efforts.
