April 20, 2022: State of Illinois Sues Fuel South Express Over Spill

The State of Illinois has filed a lawsuit against Fuel South Express LLC in connection with a large fuel leak earlier this month. The lawsuit is seeking a civil penalty up to $50,000 per violation and up to $10,000 for each day of a violation.
Fuel South Express owned a truck that flipped over and spilled 8,000 gallons of fuel in Granite City on April 6th. The truck had been hauling 6,400 gallons of reformulated gasoline and 2,600 gallons of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel for a total of 9,000 gallons.
Illinois Attorney General, Kwame Raoul, said “If not immediately remediated, spilled fuel can cause significant damage to the environment as well as present dangers to human health. Our complaint seeks to require Fuel South Express to take action to address this spill and ensure that any lingering environmental threats posed to the area are permanently abated.”
