An elementary school and local residents in Mt. Juliet, TN were forced to shelter-in-place on Monday. A freight train derailed in front of the elementary school. Twelve cars derailed, including a propane tanker. Authorities believe the tanker was empty at the time of the derailment but ordered the shelter in place as a precaution. Capt. Chandler of the Mt. Juliet PD stated “With anything with a train derailment, this is probably the best as possible scenario for us. 12 cars derailed on the railroad tracks on Division St. about 30 minutes ago nearly in front of Mt. Juliet Elementary School. The hazmat danger is very low and that’s good. We still need to conduct the assessments to verify what we’re being told by the train conductor, to verify that this propane tanker that is over on its side is empty. They let us know that it’s empty. It could have some residual gas, very low danger on that,.”
