A massive fire broke out in a Walmart Distribution Center in Plainfield, IN on Wednesday. The 1,000 employees were all safely evacuated from the building with no injuries. Authorities have not determined what caused the fire but an investigation lead by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is currently ongoing.
The distribution center stocks items various from clothing and food to electronics. The facility covers 1.2 million square feet and is located about 30 minutes from downtown Indianapolis.
Eighteen fire departments have combined their efforts to fight the blaze. Plainfield Fire Chief Brent Anderson stated “Everything was working appropriately, but this has such a heavy fire load that it overtook our crews and our ability to extinguish that fire safely. It sounds like there was lots of clothing in the area where the fire started, wrapped in plastic and such. Right now we have no idea what may have started this (and) no reason to believe it’s suspicious or anything. We will do our due diligence over the next coming days or weeks to figure that out.”
