The Federal Railroad Administration issued a safety advisory reminding railroads and contractors that improper electrode contact with the rail during welding can cause electrode-induced pitting. This can lead to fatigue fractures and rail failure.
FRA originally published the notice in the Federal Register on August 16, 2017. The notice also included recommendations for the industry to prevent electrode-induced pitting.
