An 18-wheeler overturned during morning rush hour on US-64 in Rocky Mount, NC on Friday morning. The truck was hauling explosives and hazardous materials, both of which spilled out onto the highway.
Residents and businesses within half a mile of the crash site were temporarily evacuated due to the nature of the materials involved.
The highway was closed in both directions once it was determined that the hazardous materials had the potential to explode. The truck driver suffered minor injuries. He was sighted for exceeding the posted speed limit on an off ramp. He was cooperating with authorities and actively assisted the fire department with the cleanup efforts since he knows how to handle the materials on board the truck.
