October 25, 2022: 1 Person Killed in Illinois Derailment

One person has been killed following a collision between track equipment and a Norfolk Southern freight train in Stonington, Ill. Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call just after 12:00 on Friday afternoon. An investigation showed the train was traveling northeast on the tracks. The Legacy Grain Cooperative Trackmobile was on the mainline for Norfolk Southern. The Trackmobile appears to have crossed in front of the moving train, causing the accident.
The 69 year old grain elevator employee was killed when the vehicles collided. The locomotive engine began leaking fuel following the accident. A hazmat team was called in to clean up the area.
