A Union Pacific freight train derailed in El Paso, TX on Monday evening. One person was killed. Authorities have not released who the person killed was or if they were on the train at the time of the derailment. The derailed cars slammed into a fence, backyard shed, and struck a gas meter. Around 50 residents were temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution. No other injuries have been reported.
Firefighters shut down the damaged gas line within two hours of the derailment. Texas Gas worked overnight to repair the damaged line. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. Local residents are asked to avoid the area between Franklin and Barton while crews clean up the scene.
