Fairfield County Firefighters responded to a fatal accident involving hazardous materials on I-77 in South Carolina on Thursday morning. A temporary shelter-in-place order was issued for residents within one-mile of the accident scene.
Authorities said a tractor trailer hauling 20,000 pounds of ammonia sulfate was involved in an accident with two other vehicles. Trooper Gary Miller of the SC Highway Patrol said one of the vehicles, a Chevrolet truck, made an improper lane change, was struck by the tractor trailer, and then struck a third vehicle. Two of the vehicles involved caught fire. The tractor trailer spilled an unknown amount of the ammonia sulfate onto the interstate. One person was killed in the accident but their identity has not been released.
All lanes on I-77 were shut down for several hours while crews extinguished the fire and cleaned up the chemical spill.
