Several roads were closed over the weekend in Warren County, PA following a hazardous materials incident. The Conewango Township Police Department said a tanker truck that originated from United Refinery traveled along Route 62 towards New York State. The truck was found to be leaking sulfuric acid in several locations as it was traveling through Warren. Residents are asked not to touch or drive through any remaining chemical spills.
Conewango Township crews were dumping dirt on the spills to absorb the chemical. Officials have stated that the sulfuric acid from this spill is not posing a significant airborne threat to local residents, although a strong odor could be detected near the scene. Officials said the area will remain closed until the clean-up has been completed.
Sulfuric acid is a corrosive substance that is destructive to the skin, eyes, teeth, and lungs. Severe exposure can even result in death.
