Teck Metals Ltd. has been fined $55,060.11 for an anhydrous ammonia spill in British Columbia. A railcar in the unloading area of the company’s Trail worksite spilled an unknown amount of the chemical. The worksite was evacuated. Anhydrous ammonia exposure can cause severe irritation of the nose and throat, permeant scarring to the skin, pulmonary edema, and even death.
Following the incident, WorkSafeBC inspected the site and found multiple safety violations. WorkSafeBC stated Teck Metals Ltd. “failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety. This was a high-risk violation.”
