PHMSA has announced its plan to suspend a rule authorizing the transportation of LNG by rail. The rule in question was made during former President Trump’s administration. A coalition of 15 attorneys general representing 14 states and Washington DC have filed comments in support of the decision.
Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh said “Suspending the Trump administration’s misguided LNG-by-rail rule is a step in the right direction. Allowing these dangerous trains to travel along our freight-rail network, much of which passes through minority and disadvantaged communities, would put millions of our states’ residents at risk while further fueling the climate crisis.”
The coalition feels the rule was based on flawed and incomplete safety assessments. They also feel there was inadequate discussions of the rule’s impact on low-income, minority, underserved and disadvantaged communities.
