Canadian Pacific won its petition seeking exemption from the merger rules established by the US Surface Transportation Board in 2001. Canadian railroads have run into antitrust issues when trying to expand into the United States in previous years. This ruling brings Canadian Pacific one step closer to gaining approval of its bid for Kansas City Southern.
The railroad agreed to purchase KCS for $25 billion in March. This will create the first US – Mexico – Canada railroad. The two railroads combined network will connect points throughout Canada and Mexico, and points in the Midwest, Northeast and South Central U.S.
