OSHA issued a proposed rulemaking that will modify the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) in an effort to conform with the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
OSHA feels the proposed changes will reduce costs and burdens. They will also improve the quality and consistency of information provided to employers and employees regarding chemical hazards and associated protective measures. Additionally, the agency feels the proposed changes will enhance the effectiveness of HCS by ensuring employees are appropriately informed of the chemical hazards that they may be exposed to, thus reducing the incidence of chemical-related occupational illnesses and injuries.
