The Federal Railroad Administration is proposing making changes to the brake system safety standards in order to address operations using an electronic air brake slip system (eABS).
The proposed rule change will provide alternative regulatory framework for railroads to use when they choose to use an eABS
system, however, railroads will not be required to use such a system.
The NPRM will extend the distance certain rail cars may travel from
1,500 miles to 2,500 miles without having to stop for brake and mechanical tests, if the cars have a valid eABS record.
Interested parties may submit comments on the proposed rule until March 16, 2021.
