June 15, 2020: Train Derailment in Wynnewood, OK Caused Evacuations

Garvin County Emergency Management was forced to evacuate local residents when a train carrying sodium hydrosulfide, an inhalation hazard, derailed in Wynnewood, OK.
Garvin County Emergency Management Director Dave Johnson said “In the middle of the night, at 2 o’clock in the morning when everything is dark and you can’t see what’s leaking and what’s not and what the damage is, it’s just very important to take that extra step to make sure that everybody’s okay.”
Residents living with a third of a mile on both sides of the train were evacuated out of precaution. No injuries were reported and residents were able to return to their homes. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
