In an effort to create consistency between the U.S. and Canadian regulations, the Federal Railroad Administration has made several changes to the regulations regarding brake inspections, tests, and equipment. The changes will include the incorporation of relief from various provisions provided in long-standing waivers related to single car air brake tests, end-of-train devices, helper service, and brake maintenance.
In addition, FRA has extended the amount of time freight rail equipment is permitted to be “off air” before a new brake inspection is required. The final rule will be effective as of December 11, 2020.
