June 19, 2020: DOT Issues Final Rule Allowing Bulk Transport of LNG By Rail

The Department of Transportation (USDOT), the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), issued a final rule authorizing the bulk transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail.
Transportation Secretary, Elaine Chao, stated “The Department’s new rule carefully lays out key operational safeguards to provide for the safe transportation of LNG by rail to more parts of the country where this energy source is needed.”
This final rule will also require remote monitoring of the pressure and location of LNG tank cars, two-way end of train or distributed power system when transporting 20 or more LNG tank cars in a continuous block or a total of 35 LNG cars anywhere in the train consist, and railroads will be required to conduct risk assessments to evaluate safety and security.
