Eleven Norfolk Southern rail cars, two locomotives, and 50 shipping containers derailed near the Georges Station Road bridge in Hempfield, PA on Friday. The accident forced Amtrak to cancel passenger service on Saturday between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg because both lines were still blocked. Amtrak spokeswoman, Kimberly Woods, stated “That section of the Norfolk Southern tracks is used by Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian train that connects Pittsburgh with Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York City. Passengers on the Pennsylvanian on Friday were transported by bus from Altoona to their destination.”
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation but there were no injuries reported and no hazardous materials were on board.
