October 9, 2019: GDOT to Install Two-Day Closure on Georgia 247 Spur Following Derailment

The Georgia Department of Transportation is installing a two-day closure to repair tracks that were damaged during a derailment Wednesday afternoon.
A Norfolk Southern train on its way to Jacksonville derailed near the Georgia 247 Spur, dumping over 30 cars into the woods. The train was carrying automotive parts and chemicals.
According to Houston County Fire Chief, Christopher Stoner, the derailed cars caused a large high pressure natural gas line that feeds into the Perdue Farms plant to rupture. The gas company was able to isolate the valves to the line and no plant employees were injured.
Local residents are being advised to find alternative routes as the closure will remain in effect through Friday night.
