A BNSF freight train carrying isophthalic acid, a non-toxic organic compound, derailed in Knox County, MO on Sunday morning. Only 11 of the 91 cars left the track but one caught fire. Richard Witherow, Chief of the Baring Volunteer Fire Department, said he lives about two miles from where the derailment happened, and he could see the thick black smoke from his house.
The fire department was on scene for approximately three hours. No injuries were reported and there was no threat residents in the immediate area. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
