February 1, 2021: Train Derailment Causes Temporary Evacuations in El Centro, CA

A Union Pacific freight train derailed in El Centro, California on Monday evening. A total of 31 cars rolled on their sides at the intersection of the railroad crossing and 8th street. Fifty homes in the nearby area were evacuated for four hours while the El Centro Fire Department assessed the scene.
It was later determined that all of the derailed cars were empty. There were no injuries reported and no hazardous materials were involved in the incident. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
