For the second time in two months, a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed near Guernsey, Sask., around 6am this morning closing a major highway in both directions. Residents reported seeing a large mushroom cloud of black smoke and have estimated 25-30 cars were off the tracks, although officials have not confirmed this yet.
Kyle Brown, a local resident, said “It looks like an inferno…like a war zone really. Its is pretty bad.” Humboldt RCMP ordered that both lanes of Highway 16 be closed in both directions, as well as the junction with Highway 20.
Canadian Pacific confirmed the derailment occurred and stated that emergency responders had been sent to the site and were making an initial assessment.
