January 3, 2020: Canadian Pacific Train Derails, Spilling Chemicals in LeClaire, Iowa

Approximately 20 Canadian Pacific freight and tanker cars derailed a few yards from the Mississippi River in LeClaire, Iowa. Scott County Emergency Management Agency said a chemical leak was found but it had not entered the river. Local businesses were evacuated for a short time while officials assessed the leak but have since been given permission to reopen.
Officials believe the derailment was caused by a broken rail. There was some minor damage to personal vehicles around the derailment site but no injuries were reported.
Hazmat responders and environmental specialists have stated there is no public safety or health risk resulting from the chemical spill.
