The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has announced the selection of 20 members to the newly formed Lithium Battery Safety Advisory Committee (LBSAC). The members are from various transportation and manufacturing industries, including marketers and experts in testing and quality assurance, highway safety, and emergency response.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao stated “The committee’s input will help the Department lead safety improvements in the transportation of lithium batteries to better protect shippers and travelers around the world.”
The Lithium Battery Safety Advisory Committee was established in May with the goal of providing input to continually strengthen the safety of lithium battery transportation. This committee will be responsible for developing policy positions for international forums, providing the department with information on new technologies and transportation safety practices, guiding activities to increase awareness of safety requirements, and developing a report on steps the private sector and international regulatory authorities can take to ensure the safe air transportation of lithium batteries.
